Filters-The ’F’ Word in Air Purification!

Did you know that your Indoor Air is up to 10 times more polluted than outside air? Sanitizing your indoor air can have healthy benefits for you and your family. You know that an air purifier can help take particulates out of the air…particulates that bother allergies and asthma, particulates that carry viruses and bacteria. There are many types of Air Purification systems to choose from. What do you look for in a quality air purifier?
The oldest form of air purification is an Air Filter or a HEPA filter. While filters are good at trapping particulate they do have their draw backs. If the particulate is smaller than the hole in the filter then it will just pass right through it. It should be noted that it is the smallest stuff we need to worry about since our bodies will naturally filter out larger particulates when we try to breathe them in. Filters will do nothing for chemicals or odors either. Filters need to be cleaned or replaced frequently since a dirty filter will not work properly. Filters are more expensive to run as they need a pretty powerful motor with suction to draw in particulates from the air. They tend to be large in size and are noisy. A good filter unit can only clean the air in one room. Therefore, one in each room will be needed for the best coverage.
Ionizers are one of the quickest ways to get particulate out of the air without having filters to replace or clean. An Ionizer alone has its drawback though. It puts an electric charge on particulate floating in the air causing it to get heavy and drop out of the air. Now you have lots of dust on surfaces and floors which require cleaning. If the unit is too close to a wall, it can cause the particulate to adhere to the wall causing a ’black-wall effect’. It does not wash off. An ionizer that has low levels of ozone with it is a better choice since the ozone will react with the ionized particle and change it back into oxygen. High levels of ozone are not recommended in a living environment. .04 ppm or less is the optimal amount of ozone needed to sanitize the air and surfaces of your environment. Ionizers only do one room effectively.
UV (ultraviolet) technology has been around for many years but is just recently being used more effectively in air purification. UV creates very low levels of ozone and ionization along with a mixture of purifying hydroxls for a very effective sanitization of the air and surfaces. Units are generally quiet with a small fan. Units are appealing as they require no cleaning or maintenance other than the UV lamp replacement on a yearly or bi-yearly basis. They cover a higher square footage and have the capability of being installed directly into the furnace.
Now that you have a basic understanding of a few of the most popular types of purifiers, you are ready for this handy checklist to find the perfect purifier for YOU!

1) How large of an area does the purifier clean effectively? (500 sq. ft. is a standard size bedroom) Will you need multiple units?
2) Does it have replaceable parts, filters, or plates? How difficult are they to change or clean? Learn the prices of these parts!
3) Is it noisy or does it create a breeze? Does it have too strong of an ozone smell? These are important issues if your family finds these things annoying and shuts off the unit all the time.
4) If the unit is available through a Multi-level company and even though it may be considered better quality than a store-bought unit, it should be noted that the price is usually very high to accommodate payments to all the people in the organization. Will it be easy to get repairs done if needed?
5) How long is the warranty?
6) Are scientific studies available on the effectiveness of its sanitization process?
7) Are testimonials available? Is a FREE trial available? Sometimes just testing it in your home is the best way to see how you like it.

An Air Purifier has changed the way our family lives! We breathe better, sleep better, get sick less often and have more control over our allergies and asthma! We wouldn’t live without one! We breathe every minute…shouldn’t the air be clean?
